Visiting a Biogas Plant in secondary school in Nyamata, Rilima Sector. The Biogas Plant was subsidized by the National Domestic Biogas Program (http://www.reg.rw/images/Documents/Biomass_project_brief.pdf) which is supported by SNV (http://www.snvworld.org/) and GIZ (http://www.giz.de/en/html/index.html). Having at least two cows is one of the requirements to participate in this program. Biogas is produced from cow dung and human waste. In addition, water is needed to producebiogas. Due to water shortages not the whole potential for biogas production can be utilized. According to interviewed school staff sufficient water supply could enable biogas production that covers cooking energy demand to 100%. At the moment approx. 50% are covered by biogas. Residual cooking energy demand is provided by firewood.
Many thanks to Rwanda Energy Group (REG) for showing us the plant.
